The term, Oriental carpet, traditionally has been used to describe hand-knotted rugs from the East. The process typically involves stretching warp threads on a loom and knotting the piles to these threads. When a row of knots is completed, a weft thread is inserted. Once the entire carpet is knotted, the piles are shorn. To a large degree, the precision of the design depends on how tightly and densely the rug has been knotted and how short the pile has been cut.
Historically, the great carpet-producing areas include Turkey, Persia, the Caucasus and Turkestan. Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, India and China also must be added to the list.
The rug's density, or number of knots per square inch, can be a useful indicator of the fineness and durability of the oriental hand-made rug. The more knots mean the better quality. A superb Oriental rug may have more than 400 to 1,000 knots per square inch. Those top quality rugs are always made in China with pure silk. In most other oriental carpet producing countries, they mainly use wool and cotton. Chinese silk carpets are very soft and light with beautiful designs which are stunning and pleased your eyes. Chinese craftsmen even made silk rugs with 1 million knots per square foot (6900 knots per square inch), which was listed in the Guinness Record.
